Cylindrical rollers provide a larger contact area than balls, making these bearings suited to demanding applications where load capacity matters. Commonly used in gearboxes, pumps, motors and industrial machinery.

Roller bearings use cylindrical or tapered rollers instead of balls. A roller touches the raceway along a line rather than at a point, so the load is spread over a larger area. That is why roller bearings carry heavier loads and handle shock better than ball bearings of the same size.
The type you need depends on the direction of the load. Cylindrical roller bearings are strong across the shaft, tapered roller bearings carry combined loads, and spherical roller bearings also tolerate some misalignment.

When should I choose a roller bearing over a ball bearing?
Choose a roller bearing when the load is heavy, when there is shock loading, or when a ball bearing keeps wearing out early. Ball bearings are better for higher speeds and lighter loads.
What is the difference between cylindrical and tapered roller bearings?
Cylindrical roller bearings mainly carry load across the shaft. Tapered roller bearings carry load across and along the shaft at the same time, so they are usually used in pairs.
