A needle bearing uses long, thin rollers, called needles, in place of balls. The slim section means the bearing is only a little thicker than the shaft it supports, while the long rollers give a large contact area and a high radial load capacity.
Needle bearings are common in gearboxes, pumps, automotive parts and compact machinery. They carry load across the shaft, so they are usually paired with another bearing that takes any load along the shaft.

- A thin pressed steel outer cup that fits straight into a housing.
Needle roller and cage assemblies
- Needles held in a cage, running directly on a hardened shaft and housing.
Machined needle bearings
- Solid outer ring, with or without an inner ring.

Why choose a needle bearing?
Choose one when the space around the shaft is small but the load is high. A needle bearing carries much more load than a ball bearing of the same outer diameter.
Do I need an inner ring?
Not always. If the shaft is hardened and ground, needles can run directly on it. If not, use a bearing with an inner ring. Tell us the shaft finish and we will advise.
Can needle bearings take load along the shaft?
Standard needle bearings carry load across the shaft only. For loads along the shaft, use a thrust needle bearing or add a separate thrust bearing.
Can you match a needle bearing from a sample?
Yes. Send a photo with the measured diameters and we will confirm the match.
