A plain spherical bearing has a ball shaped inner ring that sits inside a matching outer ring. The ball can tilt and rotate inside the outer ring, so the bearing allows angular movement and absorbs misalignment between a shaft and its housing.
Steel on steel versions are lubricated and suit very heavy loads. Maintenance free versions have a self lubricating liner in the outer ring, so they run without regreasing, which suits hard to reach joints.

What does misalignment mean?
It means the shaft and housing are not perfectly in line, because of mounting error or because the parts move. A spherical bearing tilts to follow that movement instead of binding.
Should I choose maintenance free or steel on steel?
Maintenance free suits joints that are hard to grease or must stay clean. Steel on steel suits very heavy or shock loaded joints where regular lubrication is possible.
What is the difference between a spherical bearing and a rod end?
A rod end is a spherical bearing built into a housing with a threaded shank. If you need to connect a rod, look at our rod ends.
